Natural Beauty 101: Facial Skincare

Tuesday, 7 May 2013

Two of the most common complaints I hear about switching to natural beauty products is that they're either too expensive or too hard to find.

But with more consumers pushing for formulas with fewer chemicals in them, manufacturers and retailers are responding in kind by expanding their skincare lines and making it easier than ever to shop natural.

As promised last month, here are some of my favourite cleansers, toners, serums, acne treatments and moisturizers I use regularly to help keep my skin soft and supple. I have combination skin but all of the products lines featured below have different options to suit various skin types and are available locally in the GTA!

Facial Cleanser & TonerAubrey's Organics Blue Green Algae Line

Packed with nutrient-rich organic blue green algae, this oil-balancing line is vegan, animal-friendly and gluten-free too.

Cleanser: The facial cleansing lotion lives up to its name with a light creamy texture that cleanses but doesn't clog pores thanks to its castile liquid soap and coconut fatty acid cream base. Added bonus: the ingredient list is chemical and paraben free thanks to Aubrey's signature preservative made from citrus seed extract and vitamins A, C and E.

Toner: The complementary facial toner packs a herbal punch with a soothing and moisturizing blend of over 30 herbal and plant extracts including organic lavender, camomile and nettle. Although toners are typically used to prep the skin for moisturizer or restore proper pH levels, I love using Aubrey's toner to remove makeup from the gentle eye area thanks to its cooling and refreshing effect.

Priced at $20 for the cleanser and $13 for the toner (both 8 oz. each), Aubrey's skincare products are some of the best natural beauty buys on the market, and they can be easily found at Whole Foods, Planet Organic and select Loblaws/Superstores.

I'll be back soon to share some tips on where to find safer beauty products that won't break the bank :)

Happy Wednesday!

Fashion Friday: Blushing

Friday, 25 May 2012

It's Fashion Friday and I'm in love....
...with this glow-inducing blush compact from Jill Stuart cosmetics! Available in nine different colourways featuring poppy pinks and pretty corals, the mix and match quad provides the perfect hit of colour to brighten up your face for spring.

Here are my favourite palettes from the collection:
Little Bouquet
Lovely Tulip
Milky Strawberry

Sadly, Jill Stuart cosmetics are sold primarily in Asia, although eBay retailers and Pacific Mall resellers can hook up beauty addicts for a pretty penny starting at $45+ per palette.

Which palette is your favourite? Are there any blush compacts or colours you swear by once warm weather hits?  :)

Fashion Friday: Marilyn Monroe

Saturday, 24 March 2012

Doesn't Marilyn look simply stunning in the poster for this year's Cannes Film Festival?

I love the interplay of soft gold with the simple black and white photograph and the way that the light seems to illuminate not only from the birthday candle but from Marilyn herself.

What do you think of this year's poster?  Do you think Marilyn is a good choice for the festival's 65th anniversary?

Fashion Friday: Nicole Richie

Friday, 9 March 2012

Nicole Richie looks simply fabulous in the latest issue of Ocean Drive magazine.

The bun! The fringe! Those baby blue peep toe shoes!

I'd happily settle for any of the above, wouldn't you? ;)

Fashion Friday: Thoroughly Modern Millie

A tip of the hat to this swoon-worthy taupe-white topper from modern Bosnian milliner Behida Dolic:

Hand-draped and made-to-measure, this elegant netted creation may set you back $380.00, but it will also net you a parade of praise and compliments!

Where would you wear such an exquisite 30s style female fedora?

Fashion Friday: Retro Beauty

Friday, 2 March 2012

With the long-awaited return of Mad Men on March 25, it only seems fitting to focus my Fashion Friday posts this month on retro style and beauty!

Acclaimed costume designer Janie Bryant undoubtedly has some sartorial surprises up her sleeve for season 5, and I can't wait to see how she transitions the characters as they inch closer and closer toward the 1970s.

Until then, kick off your heels, grab a martini glass, and enjoy this quirky and alluring editorial starring Meghan Collison (the new face of Prada and a Canadian!) and shot by Ben Toms for Vogue Russia (January 2012).

See the whole editorial here.

Which photo or outfit is your favourite? :)

Personally, the stunning hair and makeup steals the show for me in every shot!

Mila Kunis for Miss Dior S/S 12

Tuesday, 28 February 2012

Hollywood beauty Mila Kunis joins Black Swan co-star Natalie Portman as the newest brand ambassador for Dior. Although I could do without the strange Photoshop fogging effect, I love how Mila looks both fresh faced and elegant.

Fashion Friday: Let it Snow...

Friday, 6 January 2012

Winter wonderland has finally arrived in this part of Canada!  To mark the occasion (which happened funnily enough the day after Christmas), here are some of my favourite wintry-inspired images from various editorials and portfolios...

Terry Richardson for Harper's Bazaar

Michelle Williams by Alexei Hay for British Elle

Nikole Luna by Michael David Adams

Speaking of fancy winter outfits, what did you wear for NYE? :)

Fashion Friday: Table for One

Friday, 30 December 2011

Editorial: Table for One
Model: Fitria Yusuf
Makeup: Fransiska Effendi
Photographer: Hakim Satriyo
Stylist: Aldi Indrajaya

Dark, moody, and sensual images celebrating the culinary and the couture in the October issue of Indonesia Tatler Travel and Gourmet magazine.

Doesn't model Fitria Yusuf look like a dead ringer for Maggie Cheung in Wong Kar Wai's classic film In the Mood for Love?

A quick peek into stylist Indrajaya's portfolio reveals that she has pretty superb taste when it comes to men's fashion too! I totally want to snag that gorgeously patterned sweater for this snowy winter weather :)

Mustache Mani Monday

Monday, 24 October 2011

Here's a little meet-cute for your naked nails and this whimsical mustache mani!

Isn't the combination playful and funny?  The dark and elegant cocktail ring also adds a witty touch, as if your hands came all dressed up for dinner.

Would you give this look a go? :)

And just in case you prefer your mustache with a bit more panache, here are some alternative ideas to make this mani your own!

Fashion Friday: Young & Restless

Friday, 23 September 2011

How fierce is this look from Montreal label, Norwegian Wood?

The model's cropped and wavy blond locks (with an undercut no less!) paired with full brows and a strong red lip definitely recall Gwen Stefani's signature beauty.

Same crop top, different colour, paired with a softer chiffon skirt and ruffle belt.
Edgy, smart, yet sophisticated, I will never stop coveting short hair when it looks as good as this!

Would you give either of these looks a spin? :)
